چکیده

The fundamental energy gap of a periodic solid distinguishes insulators from metals and characterizes low-energy single-electron excitations. However, the gap in the band structure of the exact multiplicative Kohn-Sham (KS) potential substantially underestimates the fundamental gap, a major limitation of KS density-functional theory. Here, we give a simple proof of a theorem: In generalized KS theory (GKS), the band gap of an extended system equals the fundamental gap for the approximate functional if the GKS potential operator is continuous and the density change is delocalized when an electron or hole is added. Our theorem explains how GKS band gaps from metageneralized gradient approximations (meta-GGAs) and hybrid functionals can be more realistic than those from GGAs or even from the exact KS potential. The theorem also follows from earlier work. The band edges in the GKS one-electron spectrum are also related to measurable energies. A linear chain of hydrogen molecules, solid aluminum arsenide, and solid argon provide numerical illustrations.

Efficient band gap prediction for solids.

An efficient method for the prediction of fundamental band gaps in solids using density functional theory (DFT) is proposed. Generalizing the Delta self-consistent-field (ΔSCF) method to infinite solids, the Δ-sol method is based on total-energy differences and derived from dielectric screening properties of electrons. Using local and semilocal exchange-correlation functionals (local density an...

A new generalized Kohn-Sham method for fundamental band-gaps in solids.

We developed a method for calculating the ground-state properties and fundamental band-gaps of solids, using a generalized Kohn-Sham approach combining a local density approximation (LDA) functional with a long-range explicit exchange orbital functional. We found that when the range parameter is selected according to the formula gamma=A/(epsiloninfinity-epsilon) where epsiloninfinity is the opt...

0 Metallization of molecular hydrogen

We study metallization of molecular hydrogen under pressure using exact exchange (EXX) Kohn-Sham density-functional theory in order to avoid wellknown underestimates of band gaps associated with standard local-density or generalized-gradient approximations. Compared with the standard methods, the EXX approach leads to considerably (1 2 eV) higher gaps and significant changes in the relative ene...

Orbital localization, charge transfer, and band gaps in semilocal density-functional theory.

We derive an exchange energy functional of generalized gradient form with a corresponding potential that changes discontinuously at integer particle numbers. The functional is semilocal, yet incorporates key features that are connected to the derivative discontinuity of Kohn-Sham density-functional theory. We validate our construction for several paradigm systems and explain how it addresses ce...

Calculation of the lattice constant of solids with semilocal functionals

The exchange-correlation functionals of the generalized gradient approximation GGA are still the most used for the calculations of the geometry and electronic structure of solids. The PBE functional J. P. Perdew et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 77, 3865 1996 , the most common of them, provides excellent results in many cases. However, very recently other GGA functionals have been proposed and compete i...
